Particle Size Standards and Microspheres

Certified Particle Size Standards

As Authorised Distributors for Duke Scientific since 1990, Brookhaven are pleased to supply the full range of Duke Scientific NIST traceable certified particle size standards. These standards provide third party traceability of calibration procedures to national or international agencies through an unbroken chain of measurements with specified uncertainties.

They are available as uniform spheres of polymer, glass or silica in a range of discrete sizes from 20nm to 2000µm calibrated with linear dimensions transferred from NIST (National Institute of Standards & Technology) by Duke Scientific using methods developed in Duke’s own laboratories.

Each standard is supplied with a Certificate of Calibration and Traceability, a description of the calibration method, a table of its chemical and physical properties and a Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) with handling and disposal instructions.

3000 Series Nanosphere Size Standards 20 – 900nm

Uniform polystyrene microspheres in a range of different mean sizes, each packaged as an aqueous suspension in 15mL dropper-tipped bottles. The concentration is optimised for ease of dispersion and colloidal stability. The microspheres have a density of 1.05 g/cm3 and refractive index (589nm) of 1.59.

Nanosphere Size Standards are used for a wide variety of applications including calibration in electron microscopy, laser light scattering and colloid research.

4000 Series Polymer Microsphere Size Standards 1 –1000µm

With the same composition and physical properties as the 3000 Series, these polystyrene microsphere standards are supplied as aqueous suspensions in 15mL dropper-tipped bottles (1 – 160µm) or in dry form in 1g screw capped bottles (200µm and larger).

NEW - ChromoSphere-T Coloured Certified Size Standards

ChromoSphere-T Coloured Certified Particle Size Standards

ChromoSphere-T polymer microspheres are internally dyed with deeply coloured red or black dyes giving them very high contrast and visibility against most backgrounds. They are supplied as dry powders easily suspendable in liquid media and come in seven different mean diameters from 50 to 500µm.

(A similar range of ChromoSpheres is also available uncertified for general purpose use.)

8000 Series Silica Microspheres 0.5 – 1.6µm

Designed for applications requiring monodisperse inorganic microspheres, these particles have a higher density than polystyrene and provide more contrast than polymer microspheres in optical and electron beams. They are packaged as aqueous suspensions at 2% solids in dropper tipped bottles.

The silica spheres have a density of 1.8 – 2.2 g/cm3 and an index of refraction of 1.40 – 1.46 at 589nm.

9000 Series Glass Particle Size Standards 2 –2000µm

This range consists of borosilicate glass microspheres (certified mean diameters from 2 to 20µm) and soda lime glass microspheres (30 to 2000µm) all with narrow size distribution and NIST traceable mean diameters. They are packaged in 1g quantities of dry microspheres having a density of 2.50 – 2.55 g/cm3 and refractive index of 1.56 at 589nm.

The soda lime glass of the larger microspheres contains trace amounts of metallic elements making them easily detectable by non-dispersive x-ray methods and improving their contrast and reflectivity in optical, ultrasonic and electron beams. Soda lime microspheres have a density of 2.4 – 2.5 g/cm3 and index of refraction of 1.51 at 589nm. Their softening temperature is 7200C and the dielectric constant is 7.3 at 1KHz and 200C.

2000 Series Uniform Polymer Microspheres 5 – 40µm

First introduced in 1971, this range of certified microsphere size standards continue to find application where moderate uniformity of particle size is required rather than the very narrow distributions (CV <5%) of the other standards. They are widely used with laser diffraction and light blockage instruments, acoustical imaging, electrolyte displacement (e.g. Coulter principle) and other methods often used to characterise coarse distributions.

Like the 3000 and 4000 Series microspheres, they are composed of polystyrene making them durable and chemically stable. Their density is 1.05 g/cm3 and refractive index 1.59 at 589nm. They are packaged in 15mL dropper tipped vials and supplied with certificate of NIST traceable mean diameter.

Additional certified particle size standards are described in the section on Standards for Particle Counting Methods.
