ZetaPALS – The Zeta Potential Analyser with a Thousand Times More Sensitivity
Developed by Brookhaven and based
on the work of Professor Brian Vincent at the
University of Bristol, the ZetaPALS enables routine
measurement of electrophoretic mobilities up to
a thousand times smaller than has so far been
possible with conventional electrophoretic light
scattering methods.
In
practice this means that for the first time, without
the use of extremely high voltages, electrophoretic
mobilities and zeta potentials can be determined
quickly and easily even in traditionally "difficult"
conditions. For instance, particles in low polarity
(organic) media, in high viscosity or high salt
concentrations or simply where the zeta potential
is at its lowest e.g. close to the isoelectric
point.
But thats not all. The ZetaPALS is equally
at home with the more normal colloidal conditions
low salt, high polarity media making
it ideal for all applications. It comes complete
with all the facilities of the ZetaPlus
with which it shares all its other specifications
including the easy to use, electroosmosis-free
cell design. As with the ZetaPlus,
all the capability of the Brookhaven 90Plus
dynamic light scattering system for particle size
distribution analysis can be added at any time,
now or in the future.
With a high specification
computer built in, the ZetaPALS requires minimal
bench space. Its range of sample cells includes
low cost disposable plastic cells for use with
appropriate samples as well as glass and quartz
cells which can be used together with the solvent
resistant electrode assembly for more "aggressive"
liquids. For particle sizing where sample availability
is limited, special low volume cells are available.
Calculation of zeta potentials from electrophoretic
mobilities requires a knowledge of the dielectric
constant of the suspending medium. For the most
frequently used liquids, values are already incorporated
into the ZetaPALS software. The Brookhaven BI-870
Dielectric Constant Meter provides a rapid
and simple means to determine dielectric constants
of other liquids and liquid mixtures which may
not be readily available from the literature.
