BI-870 Dielectric Constant Meter

The accuracy of zeta potential determinations by electrophoresis depends on accurate knowledge of the dielectric constant of the liquid in which the particles or droplets are dispersed. For water and many other common pure liquids, values are sometimes available in the literature. But for less common liquids, this is rarely the case. Moreover, there is no satisfactory and simple equation for calculating values for mixtures of liquids from their component values.

The Brookhaven BI-870 Dielectric Constant Meter provides the simple answer. Simply insert the probe into the liquid or liquid mixture, adjust two controls on the front panel and read the dielectric constant from the display.

Dielectric constants from 1 to 200 can be measured for liquids with conductivities up to 10µS/m at temperatures from 22 to 580C. Approximately 23mL of sample liquid is required for measurements with the standard probe; a small volume probe requiring only about 7mL is also available.

The BI-870 Dielectric Constant Meter has many applications but is particularly useful when making zeta potential measurements in non-aqueous media using the Brookhaven ZetaPALS.
