High resolution particle size analysis from 10nm
to 100µm
By combining both gravitational
and centrifugal sedimentation in one instrument,
the BI-XDC, Brookhaven brings these well established
methods of particle sizing right up to date for
today's fine particle technology. Fast and accurate
size distribution measurement across the "one-micron"
transition region can easily be obtained. Now,
with a single instrument, you can get true high
resolution, accurate, particle size distributions
from 10 nanometres up to 100 microns. Brookhaven's
advanced scanning detector technology and wide
range of disc speeds let you optimise analysis
times and broaden the range of samples which can
be analysed.
Compared with light scattering, x-ray detection
simplifies the measurement process by eliminating
the optical properties of the particles and their
surrounding liquid from the calculation. Analysis
times are typically 3 - 30 minutes and depend
more upon the breadth of the particle size distribution
than on mean diameter. As a rule of thumb, one
decade of particle diameter takes eight minutes
to analyse.
The progress of the analysis can be monitored
in real time throughout the measurement, not only
on the screen but also by direct visual observation
of the sample during the centrifugation process.
The Windows software provides a variety of graphical
and tabular outputs including differential and
cumulative distributions of particle sizes weighted
by volume, surface area and number on linear or
logarithmic scales. Up to six plots can be overlaid
for visual comparison. SPC (Statistical Process
Control) charts can easily be built up using measurements
selected from the database of results, quickly
highlighting trends in manufacturing processes
and identifying out of specification materials.
The Brookhaven BI-XDC is used
in a wide range of industrial and research laboratories
throughout the world. Applications include abrasives,
inorganic pigments especially TiO2, catalysts,
metal oxides, ceramics, minerals, clays and metal
powders.
